Aquarium water pumps are specialized pumps that are submerged in an aquarium and use motors to ensure the aquarium has proper water circulation. It is quite popular in medium to larger sized fish tanks.
How the aquarium pumps work largely depends on the type of aquarium pump and its features. Usually, however, it either uses an air tube to suck in air from outside and push it into the aquarium ensuring sufficient oxygenation and water circulation. In case of a water pump, however, it is submerged in the aquarium and uses some mechanical motor to ensure water movement and circulation from the bottom up.
Not all pumps go underwater, but, however, all of them need to have a part of the pump, at the very least, inside the water. Water pumps are most often completely submerged. Air pumps, on the other hand, can be completely submerged or partially submerged, but in all cases, they have an air tube that needs to be extended above the water to ensure it can suck in air to properly work.
Regular water and air pumps rarely need to be cleaned – they’ll probably function even if you clean them once a year. Fish tank pump and filters, on the other hand, need to be cleaned much more often:
