External filters

The filter is the most important piece of equipment in an aquarium. It keeps the water clean and maintains safe living conditions for the inhabitants of the aquarium.  Water filtration consists in the constant removal of debris and pollutants.  There are three kinds of filtration:  mechanical, biological, and chemical.  The types of filters most commonly used in aquariums are internal filters, external hang-on filters, and external canister filters.

External filters by Aquael

The most efficient way to purify water in an aquarium is by using a canister filter. Canister filters can hold a large volume of filter media and offer the highest filter capacity measured in litres of water flowing through the filter per hour. Their principle of operation is very simple. A canister filter is an air-tight container filled with filter media. The container is connected to the aquarium only through a set of inlet and outlet hoses. Water flows into the filter through the inlet hoses, passes through the filter media, and is pumped back into the tank through the outlet hoses. Canister filters are suitable for use with virtually any aquarium, provided the right model is chosen.

External Aquarium Filters – Why are They Necessary?

Many beginners to fishkeeping think they only need to install a small internal filter inside their aquarium and change its media once in a while and that’s it, but this perception couldn’t be further from the truth. There are multiple reasons for installing an external filter in your fish tank:

  • It is more powerful and can accommodate larger tanks: internal filters usually need to be smaller to fit inside the aquarium and generally are only useful for tanks 50 litres (~11 gallons) or smaller. If the tank is larger than that, they usually won’t be able to effectively filter out all the debris and ensure effective water circulation. External filters are more powerful and capable of effectively filtering much bigger aquariums.
  • More options: internal filters are limited by both power and space, so you don’t get a lot of options when choosing one. With external filters, you’ll be able to choose from a wider variety of media that accommodate both freshwater and saltwater aquarium needs – there are even external filters with heaters. Products like our MULTIKANI are modular and upgradable with different kinds of media for both chemical and biological filtration giving you complete control over the process.

How to Choose the Right External Fish Tank Filter?

To learn how to choose the right filter for your aquarium, you must first consider the two primary functions of a filter: to filter out debris, uneaten food, excrement, etc. and ensure water circulation and appropriate levels of oxygen, ammonia, nitrite etc. in the water. You need to choose a filter that provides the best performance on both of these fronts. This isn’t as easy as it sounds and there are multiple parameters that will determine which filter is best for the job which includes the aquarium size, the type of water, the type of fish, whether there are real or artificial plants in the tank, and the type of soil you’re using. You need to make sure you consider all these aspects before the final decision. The filter is extremely crucial for your fish’s health and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is Better – Internal or External Aquarium Filters?

Both kinds of filters have their uses. Internal filters generally occupy a very small area and don’t require any space outside the tank and they are generally quite good for small fish tanks. External filters have their own advantages, too, which we touched on earlier on the page.

Is a Bigger Aquarium Filter Better?

Contrary to popular belief, size matters. Larger filters are usually more powerful and have more space to adequately filter the water. That’s why you should buy either our Ultramax or Ultra Filter

Should the Aquarium Filter Always be On?

All the filters have bacteria living in them that help regulate the levels of ammonia and nitrate in the water, and these bacteria might die if they don’t have a steady stream of water. But the filter being on doesn’t mean it has to work in full capacity, most filters will allow you to regulate how quickly the water moves and is filtered out.
